Skin cancers

"Black skin cancer" (malignant melanoma) is a special focus at our center, as this type of cancer can be particularly aggressive. It usually develops from brownish to blackish pigment marks on the skin, rarely from unpigmented reddish nodules. It is noticeable by increasing irregularities, color changes and changes in shape as well as occasionally by itching. We also treat patients with metastatic melanomas of the mucous membranes and the choroid membrane of the eye.

The "light skin cancer" (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen carcinoma) means the mostly non-pigmented superficial, i.e. epithelial skin tumors of the actual outer skin and its precursors, Bowen's disease and actinic keratoses. With 200 new diagnoses per 100,000 U per year, light skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in humans.

We also specialize in rare types of skin cancer. These are the lymphomas of the skin (mycosis fungoides, B-cell lymphoma of the skin), which originate from immune cells in the blood-forming organs, and sarcomas of the skin from connective tissue cells (leiomyosarcoma, angiosarcoma, Kaposi's sarcoma, atypical fibroxanthoma, dermatofibroxanthoma protuberans) aggressive Merkel cell carcinoma and skin metastases.

Therapy procedure

All modern therapy methods are available to us or in-house for treatment.
These are primarily local measures, initially surgical therapy with incision margin controls and sentinel lymph node biopsies, regional additional procedures using cytostatic therapy (electrochemotherapy, chemosaturation), vaccination therapies (oncolytic viruses), cryotherapy on the skin (liquid nitrogen) and organs (using interventional radiology), some laser therapies . The radiation therapies are carried out with UV light (PUVA, UVB311, UVA1) or red light (PDT). In addition, the latest intensified procedures (photons, electrons, ions) are available in the radiation therapy clinic: modern intensity-modulated radiation therapies (IMRT and VMAT), 3D-conformal radiotherapy and all stereotactic procedures for the brain, lungs, liver, the entire spectrum of Brachytherapy and, in selected cases, the ion beam therapy center.

System therapies are carried out intravenously with new antibodies for immune stimulation, originally developed in black skin cancer, or with tablets for the targeted blockage of growth-promoting signal pathways in cancer cells with small molecules. If necessary, but less and less, we also use chemotherapy. Of course, we or our cooperation partners offer clinical studies for innovative therapy concepts, which we are happy to convey as required.

Support offers

In the Anneliese Pohl Cancer Center of our house, to which our “Marburg Skin Tumor Center (DKG)” and other organ tumor centers are connected, there are additional offers such as pain consulment services, psychosocial care, supportive measures and palliative medicine.
